A. Ploumidis

Dr. Achilles Ploumidis graduated form the Medical School of the University of Athens (UOA) and continued his residency in Urology in Athens. He completed a two-year master degree of the UOA in "Minimally Invasive Surgery, Robotic Surgery and Telesurgery" with distinction. He furthermore received his PhD from the Medical School of the UOA with distinction by defending his thesis. He pursued a fellowship program in robotic surgery at the “Karolinska Institutet” of Sweden with a scholarship from the Hellenic Urological Association that he received after written exams. There he specialized in robotic surgery of the lower urinary tract (prostate, bladder, pelvic lymph nodes) under the supervision of Prof. Peter Wiklund, while undertaking clinical research projects for prostate cancer. He further continued his fellowship training in robotic surgery with a scholarship from the European Robotic Urological Association (ERUS) at the OLV Vattikuti Robotic Surgery Institute in Belgium under the supervision of Prof. Alexander Mottrie. During his training he continued to publish and held an instructor position in robotic surgery at the dry and wet lab of the ORSI Robotic Training Center. He did a fellowship in endourology and flexible ureteroscopy at the “Hôpital Tenon, Université Pierre et Marie Curie” in Paris with a scholarship from the European Society of Urology (EUSP), under the supervision of Prof. Olivier Traxer. He took part in scientific work of the department as well as in flexible ureterescopy courses. Moreover he has been teaching young urologists robotic surgery in hands-on-training courses (International Workshop in Robotic Surgery for Southeastern Europe, Annual EAU congress - HOT Robotic Courses) and is frequently invited for lectures in European congresses. He teaches at the Medical School of the UOA at the postgraduate master course "Minimum Invasive Surgery, Robotic Surgery and Telesurgery" and is responsible for the hands-on-training of physicians in robotic surgery. He is one of the instructors in flexible ureteroscopy, at the hands-on-training session at the European Urology Residents Education Program (EUREP). He has been honored with the best poster award at the 28th Annual European Association of Urology (EAU) congress for his clinical research in prostate cancer. He has also received best poster award at the Junior European Society of Robotic Surgery (ERUS 2011) congress for comparing robotic and open surgery. He is interested and publishes in the field of basic and clinical research for prostate and bladder cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia, robotic surgery and endourology. He is a reviewer in several international scientific journals.
